Is solving a Rubik's Cube with four or more squares just like solving one with three (via the layer method)?

I know how to solve one in a minute and 42 seconds using the layer method and was wondering if getting a Rubik's cube with more than three squares could be solved using the same method. No, because you have to see that their is a group of pieces in the center, so it would be next to impossible to solve it like that.
